Promoting the Social Vaccine against HIV/AIDS

Hello Everyone,

The statistics, analyses and forecasts accompanying this year's
World AIDS Day celebrations are not very cheering. However, ad-
vocates of premarital abstinence and spousal fidelity are con-
vinced that the HIV/AIDS pandemic will be chained by responsible
sexual conduct beginning with each person, the individual. I
would like to share with you the Abstinence Pledge and ten point
mnemonics many Nigerian young persons are applying to strengthen
their position in an otherwise despairing battle.


A. My Abstinence Pledge

"I ....., hereby pledge to myself, my family and my humanity that
I will remain a virgin (or secondary virgin) until I marry, and
to remain chaste by being faithful to my spouse. I understand
that this pledge includes all forms of physical or sexual in-
volvement, which may put me in danger of failure. I make it my
life goal to keep myself physically, mentally and sexually
pure."

B. Points to Remember:

    Sex is not love
    Sex is safe only within marriage
    Abstinence builds true love; sex destroys it
    Abstinence enhances my self-esteem
    Premarital sex can kill my life goals
    STDs and HIV/AIDS come through sex
    Keeping my Virginity is healthy and cool
    I will have fun but not mess up with sex
    I am worth waiting for
    I am responsible for my decisions & actions.
