How Africa subsidizes U.S. health care (2)
------------------------------------------
This issue of health care workers migrating to the 'west' keeps
coming up. When I go through solutions proffered to redress this
and the spiralling health crisis in Africa, the emphasis is on
temporary visas, compensation by the western countries, etc.
There is little said about making conditions at home attractive
to these workers to ensure that they stay home. Let's use Nige-
ria as an example: resident doctors have been on strike for a
few months now not for an increase in wages but to get that
which is their due. Some are owed as much as 4 months back pay.
When you had this to adverse working environments, dilapidated
hospital facilities at all levels, non availability of tools to
work with just to list a few, who exactly will stay back if a
better opportunity comes along?
In these same settings you see politicians and other people in
government living in obscene opulence with complete disregard
for the health sector, academicians and universities and the
whole structure for education.
I think it will amount to denying people parts of their funda-
mental rights to survival if they overtly denied access to bet-
ter living.
