Living in dire poverty on less than $1 a day
--------------------------------------------

In sub-Saharan Africa, where half the people survive on less
than a dollar a day, life is a daily struggle for food, clothing
and shelter. HIV/AIDS and other preventable diseases add more
misery to life as infected and affected people deal with the ex-
tra burden of finding and paying for treatment.

In an incredibly touching and soul wrenching six part series of
articles, Davan Maharaj, LA Times Staff Writer paints vivid can-
vases of the feel, look and taste of life in poverty on less
than one dollar a day in much of Africa.

The series evoke a bitter taste in the mouth and a streak of
tears for souls made wretched not by choice but by a combination
of local and global policies of injustice and insanity!

Teachers in both developed and developing countries looking for
a throve of educational materials and lessons in global inequity
for high school and college social studies classes will be best
served by the series.

Development oriented people will swan at the details and rich-
ness of information.

The moral authority of institutions and leaders who on one hand
duplicitously promote poverty all over the world through complex
policies of globalization and on the other undertake the charade
of poverty eradication through a package of loans, aids, bogus
debt relief and strategy papers are also profoundly questioned.
