Postgraduate Supervision and Training Course

Of particular interest to supervisors of postgraduate students -
new, inexperienced, and seasoned academics are welcome to apply.
Professor Chris Kapp of Stellenbosch in collaboration with Pro-
fessor Stephen Chandiwana, Head Graduate studies, Faculty of
Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand is delighted to
offer you a 3-day training course on Postgraduate Supervision
and Training. (The content of the final programme will be deter-
mined by the needs of participants).
ON OFFER: A selection of six of the following modules can be in-
cluded in the final programme:
* Perspectives on postgraduate supervision
* Problems and issues in postgraduate supervision and training
* The effective supervisor ? skills and roles
* Helping the postgraduate student select a topic and a title
* Helping the postgraduate student to prepare and plan a re-
search proposal
* Helping the postgraduate student to do a literature review
* Contracting with postgraduate students (includes basics of
project management)
* Writing skills (this has become a separate workshop)
* Supervising students in writing in a second language
* Creating a culture for research and postgraduate study (creat-
ing a supportive environment).
FEE: ZAR 2,500.00 per person.
MOTIVATION: The training and preparation of future generations
of academics and scholars (?researchers?) are of vital impor-
tance. These ?future generations? are cultivated through a proc-
ess of postgraduate study which culminates in the writing of a
thesis or dissertation. Years of hard work and huge sacrifices
in terms of energy, time and resources are made by students and
supervisors. It is therefore essential that the final thesis or
dissertation completed to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.
LIMITED REGISTRATION: 30 places are available. They will be al-
located on a first-come-first-served basis. The course is being
advertised internally and externally, so prompt return of the
registration form is important.
