Condoms in Thailand and in Africa (2)

Focus group discussion we conducted among some commercial sex
workers in some part of Africa revealed that CSWs use condom to
negotiate their charges. They ask their clients to pay less with
condom and pay more without condom or sometimes the other way
round, pay more with condom and less without condom. Usually
those who have tested negative to HIV/AIDS, (usually very few of
them have) may insist on using condoms most of the time but
their clients who wouldn't care about HIV/AIDS would offer a
price that would be irresistible to the sex workers. At such
times they throw away the condom. Condom use in commercial sex
in Africa is subject to the "market forces". Most of the CSWs
are desperately seeking for money. They seldom consider the
risks associated with their practices.
