The School of Public Health (SPH) aims at producing Public
Health Practitioners and other development officials who will
serve as leaders and change agents in the field of social devel-
opment in Ghana and in the wider African context. It is one of
the three Public Health Institutions in Africa that subscribe to
the Philosophy of a School Without Walls meaning that attempts
are made to achieve an optimum mix of classroom and field work.

Nature and rationale for the course

The first short course in Social Mobilization was organized by
SPH in collaboration with UNICEF. Other international agencies
such as WHO and USAID have expressed interest in strengthening
local and regional capacity in Social Mobilisation.

The course takes into account the desire of several countries in
the region to have such training carried out in the African
socio-cultural context. It is anticipated that the course will
serve the needs of Anglophone Sub-Saharan Africa. In the same
way as a similar course run by the regional Institute of Public
Health, in Cotonou, Benin, is serving the Francophone countries.

This course is the first of its kind in Anglophone Sub-Saharan
Africa and is open to Development Workers, Officials in Public
Health and related sectors.

This is a six-week intensive certificate course, which takes
place each year in Accra-Legon, (Ghana) between June and July.

Goal and objectives

The course aims at improving the capacity of national personnel
in Anglophone Sub-Saharan Africa, to respond to social mobiliza-
tion needs of national development programmes.

At the end of the training, the participants will have acquired
Theory and practical knowledge to enable them plan, organize ,
monitor and evaluate the "Communication/Social Mobilisation"
components of Health and Development Projects and Programmes
they are responsible for.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

- Propose a suitable strategy for solving a behavior-related
problem within a community;

- Identify the problems involved and the resources required for
implementing change in a community;

- Draw up a systematic Social Mobilisation action plan;

- Determine the crucial points to monitor when implementing a
process of change in a community and
