Nigeria: Guinea-worm disease fact sheet 2005

. In 1988, the Guinea-Worm Eradicating programme reported
653,620 guinea-worm cases in 5,932 villages nationally.

. As at December 31 2004, only 495 cases were reported in 93
villages throughout Nigeria

. 739 out of 774 local councils in 25 states and the Federal
Capital Territory are free of guinea-worm disease.

. 35 local councils in 11 states are responsible for the 495
cases reported in 2004

. States reporting the few cases of guinea-worm infestation in-
clude: Benue, Niger, Oyo, Ebonyi, Ogun, Kebbi, Cross River,
Borno, Sokoto, Nasarawa and Kwara.
