Mali Religious Leaders Join HIV Fight & Congo Increases Health
Impact

Christian Religious Leaders Join HIV Fight in Mali
Population Services International (PSI)/Mali has expanded the
scope of its work with faith-based organizations through a
training for Protestant religious leaders. During the three-day
workshop, leaders received training on HIV/AIDS, the epidemiol-
ogical situation in Mali, available resources for pastors and
their parishioners and how to include HIV/AIDS messages into
weekly sermons and individual counselling. PSI/Mali is currently
in negotiations with the Archdiocese of Mali to organize a simi-
lar seminar with Catholic leaders in 2005. For more information,

PSI Congo Program Increases Health Impact Fivefold
In 2004, the Association de Santé Familiale (ASF), PSI's affili-
ate in the Democratic Republic of Congo, increased its health
impact fivefold, more than any other PSI program in the world.
It did this, in part, by adding four products to its health ar-
senal; signing agreements with the chauffeur association, police
and army; and training religious leaders on the role that modern
contraception can play in the church. ASF's program has operated
without interruption since 1987, despite years of civil unrest
that forced other NGOs to close their doors. For more informa-
tion, visit http://www.psi.org/news/0405e.html
