MRC Laboratories, The Gambia

(Infant Immunology)

MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the Council's largest establish-
ment conducting medical research in a developing country. The
Unit aims to improve the health of people in low-income coun-
tries by excellence in multi-disciplinary research programmes.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for
a two-year appointment as a Higher Scientific Officer for the
Viral Diseases Programme. The post-holder will undertake labora-
tory research in the neonatal immunology and virology programme.
S/he will use immunological and molecular biological techniques
to support studies on the development of the infant immune sys-
tem and vaccine trials, and will be responsible for overseeing
the management of the laboratory.

We seek someone with:

* BSc in a scientific discipline.
* MSc in a scientific discipline.
* A minimum of 5 years research experience in either immunology
or molecular biology post MSc.
* A good understanding of the scientific approach.
* Demonstrated ability to work in a laboratory.
* Demonstrated ability to supervise and train staff, ensuring
that high standards are maintained at all times.
* Excellent written and spoken English.
* Computer literacy.
* Good understanding of general scientific methodology.
* Demonstrated understanding of GLP.
* Ability to communicate well and work within a team.
* Although not essential, previous experience in any of the ar-
eas of immunology, molecular biology and/or laboratory manage-
ment would be preferred.

The total salary package which is in Occupational Group D3, will
be approximately D360,000 per annum. For displaced staff the
package will include displacement allowances, rent free fur-
nished accommodation, flights and other benefits.
