UN Assembly Holds Special Meeting to Review Global Action
Against HIV/AIDS
---------------------------------------------------------

New York, Jun 2 2005 12:00PM

High-level officials from around the globe convene today at
United Nations Headquarters in New York to review progress made
towards goals in the struggle against HIV/AIDS set four years
ago at an historic world meeting.

Those goals, adopted by the 2001 UN General Assembly special
session on HIV/AIDS, focus on the rapid expansion of HIV preven-
tion, care, treatment and impact alleviation by this year, 2005.

According to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's report on the
subject, the AIDS epidemic is still outpacing the global re-
sponse, despite being contained in a small but growing number of
countries. The report emphasizes the need to step up access to
prevention and treatment worldwide.
