10th International Women and Health Meeting (4)
-----------------------------------------------
Dear Kris,
I am interested in your intervention and have been wondering my-
self how the e-wonders of our contemporary world can be trans-
formed into a tool for effective human resource management as
well as facilitate our collective development without loosing
the value of our efforts or compromising standards.
Indeed, several efforts are ongoing to harness the potentials of
ICT to change the way we do things and we hope to get to the
place where we can achieve a world without borders. However, I
am worried that there is not much we can achieve with the pre-
sent system where only very few have access to the internet in
the real sense of it. For many in the north, access to the
internet is almost eternal. It's there on the mobile phones, in
the living rooms, there in the offices and even in public
places. This is hardly the case in the south where even those
who are privileged to have some access have very, very limited
access. This makes e-meetings and e-conferences, and e-trainings
very difficult to organise.
I think that at this time, the emphasis should be more on how to
improve access to ICT infrastructure including bandwidth and low
cost connectivity for developing countries. While we do this, we
should try to ensure that those who have access to the confer-
ences and trainings and meetings transfer the knowledge share
them with the members of their immediate community and ensure
that the knowledge gained helps to transform things in their
communities.
This may not be a very coherent intervention, but this is my
opinion. I will like to read other interventions.
