Medical Research Council Laboratories, The Gambia
The MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the Medical Research Coun-
cil?s largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based
and clinical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to
improve the health of people in developing countries by contrib-
uting to the development, testing and safe adoption of interven-
tions aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality
from infectious diseases.
This is an opportunity to join an international research insti-
tute. Candidates who do not hold a PhD will be encouraged to ap-
ply to our Higher Degrees Committee for sponsorship to study for
a PhD by distance learning through the Open University.
We are interested in receiving applications from candidates with
a BSc in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Biology and/or Chem-
istry and an MSc in Immunology or a related subject. You will
have a minimum of 5 years laboratory experience post MSc, ex-
perience of cell culture and an interest and appreciation of
chlamydial disease as a public health problem. Consideration
will be given to exceptional candidates having less experience
post MSc although they would be appointed at the Scientific Of-
ficer level.
You will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills
in a multi-cultural environment, proven experience of supervis-
ing staff, good organisational and management skills, excellent
written and spoken English and computer literacy which includes
Microsoft Office and at least one statistical package.
Although not essential, wider knowledge of statistical analysis,
flow cytometric assays, PCR, teaching and database management
would be an advantage.
A competitive salary will be paid in MRC?s Occupational Group
D2/D3 dependent on qualifications and experience.
The post will be for 3 years in the first instance.
