Vacancy: Health Economist - Johannesburg

Aurum Institute for Health Research focuses on improving the
health of beneficiaries of company-wide health systems using
scientifically sound and internationally accepted standards and
practices on the impact of major diseases (particularly HIV/AIDS
and tuberculosis) on employees/communities as well as interven-
tions to reduce the impact.

A vacancy has arisen for a Health Economist for the expanding
health economics programme, based at the offices of Aurum Insti-
tute for Health Research in Johannesburg. This position will fo-
cus on a programme of work evaluating the impacts of HIV/AIDS to
large mining, paper products and metal industries in Southern
Africa and the costs and benefits of providing antiretroviral
therapy (ART) for employees requiring it.

The responsibilities of this position will include:
? Undertake economics research, including data collection, cod-
ing and cleaning of data; quantitative analysis of data; review-
ing and summarising literature as required and participate in
the preparation of papers for academic journals as well as other
forms of written and oral dissemination.

? Writing of reports to companies detailing their specific cur-
rent and projected future impacts of HIV/AIDS related human re-
source and health care costs.

? Presentations to national and international companies and
other business stakeholders, research and governmental bodies,
and bilateral and multilateral development support organisa-
tions.

The requirements for the position are:
? A post graduate qualification in health economics or equiva-
lent.

? A minimum of 4 years research experience in a related field
including quantitative analysis.

? Computing skills in Microsoft office, SPSS or other statisti-
cal analysis packages

? Excellent communication, presentation, organisation and admin-
istrative skills.

? Ability to travel both locally and internationally.
