Nigeria Abstinence Coalition: Request for Partnership (2)
---------------------------------------------------------
Condoms over Abstinence
We know many of our youth (worldwide) have been and will be
sexually active. It makes perfect sense to include information
on condoms and provide condoms, in any and all prevention cam-
paigns. Reports show that the reduction in condoms provided or
not available; has rapidly increased the number of people in-
fected with HIV and the number of people who have died of AIDS.
Regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation; anyone who
is sexually active must now understand HIV has and will continue
to infiltrate villages, towns, cities and countries all over the
world. This is a much different world now!
Where we were 20-25 years ago here in Canada, this crisis, is
just beginning in many areas around the globe. Many governments
have been sheepishly slow when it comes to addressing HIV and
AIDS issues and even slower to recognize what we in North Amer-
ica recognized in the early years of HIV/AIDS epidemic. HIV in-
fections can be significantly reduced with safe sex practices
using a condom!
Dr. Emmanuel Okechukwu of the Nigerian Abstinence Coalition
writes: "research shows that youths who make the Pledge (Absti-
nence) have 40% chances of not engaging in risky sexual behav-
iours".
The studies show abstinence failure rates at 86%!
Today, before anyone engages in sex, they must have knowledge of
HIV, why it is so important to use a condom and actually know
how to physically put a condom on.
Studies show many people who practice abstinence do not use a
condom when they do engage in sexual intercourse.
Individuals often become infected because one partner was al-
ready HIV positive.
As a whole (World) we have to ensure we protect ourselves and
others from being infected with HIV! This now means using a con-
dom when engaging in sexual actively. Over 20 million people
have died. We and our future generations are negatively affected
because we did not stop the progression of HIV infections!
Faith or cultural background does not protect anyone from HIV,
using a condom does!
