Please circulate the following announcement of the Lown Fellow-
ship in Cardiovascular Disease in the Developing World to any
interested individuals, institutions, or networks. In order to
better meet the cardiovascular health needs of developing coun-
tries, the 2006 Fellowship offers:
* Emphasis on clinical and community research
* One-year training period
* No ECFMG certificate requirement

Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease in the Developing World
The Lown Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease in the Developing
World offers training in non-invasive and preventive cardiology,
public health, and research methodology for physicians from de-
veloping countries.
The program's goal is to train physicians from the developing
world as preventive cardiovascular specialists in order to ad-
dress the mounting epidemic of CVD facing their countries. Pro-
gram participants increase their knowledge and skills in the
following areas and return prepared to address cardiovascular
disease in their own countries:
* Patient care that maximizes medical management and risk factor
modification
* Public health strategies
* Clinical and community health research
The Lown Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease in the Developing
World is a program of the Lown Cardiovascular Center in Brook-
line, MA, USA and is affiliated with the Cardiovascular Division
of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard School of Public
Health, and Harvard Medical School.
This one-year fellowship program is conducted in the USA and of-
fers participants a stipend of $40,000 (US). Fellowship recipi-
ents travel to the USA on a J-1 visa. The program is not accred-
ited by the ACGME.
The following criteria are essential and cannot be waived:
* MD or equivalent and prior training in internal medicine
and/or cardiology.
* Affiliation with a supporting institution in the country of
origin. The supporting institution must guarantee the candi-
date's position upon return after completion of the fellowship.
* Firm commitment by trainee to return to medical and public
health practice in his or her home country after completing the
fellowship program.
How to apply
Candidates from developing countries who meet the specified cri-
teria are invited to submit the following materials to initiate
the application process:
* Curriculum vitae (including publications and research)
* Personal statement of intent and goals
* Letter of support from a local institution
* One letter of recommendation.
