Vacancy: Senior Scientific Officer - Geneticist

MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the Medical Research Council's
largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based and
clinical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to im-
prove the health of people in developing countries by contribut-
ing to the development, testing and safe adoption of interven-
tions aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality
from infectious diseases.

We are interested in receiving applications from suitably quali-
fied candidates to undertake excellent research in our Labora-
tory of Human Genetics. Our Unit is an excellent place to con-
duct Human Genetics research because of the juxtaposition of
field, clinical and laboratory facilities. Many DNA samples have
been collected in the past to study the role of genes in deter-
mining the susceptibility or resistance to malaria, tuberculosis
and HIV infection. Our current research areas are evaluating the
role of candidate genes in modulating the susceptibility / re-
sistance to malaria, tuberculosis and HIV.

We seek someone with:

* First degree in Biomedical Science
* PhD in Genetics
* A minimum of 2 years work experience post PhD.
* Demonstrated ability to work in a highly disciplined manner in
a laboratory based on previous experience.
* Ability to supervise staff, ensuring that high standards are
maintained at all times.
* Excellent written and spoken English
* Experience presenting results to internal and external parties.
* Excellent communication skills
* Ability to work co-operatively in a team
* Ability to work with minimal supervision
* Computer literate in Word, Excel
* Willingness to work outside working hours.

A competitive salary will be paid in MRC's Occupational Group
E1.
The post will be for 3 years extendable by mutual agreement.
