Training Fellowships in International Research Ethics
-----------------------------------------------------

Call for Applicants

The University of Malawi College of Medicine and Michigan State
University invite applicants for a training program in interna-
tional research ethics.

The goal of the 15-month program is to enable individuals with
outstanding research or scholarly potential to develop a sus-
tainable research and teaching program in the field of interna-
tional research ethics. After completing advanced course work
and independent study at Michigan State University and the Uni-
versity of Malawi, fellows will design and conduct a research or
scholarly project under the guidance of mentors from both uni-
versities, who will continue to assist the fellow until the pro-
ject report is accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed jour-
nal.

With guidance from their mentors, fellows will also design a
course relating to research ethics, to be taught at their home
institution. At the completion of all requirements, fellows will
receive an advanced Certificate of Scholarship in International
Research Ethics. Courses taken in this program can be counted
toward a Master of Public Health Degree with Specialty in Bio-
ethics from the University of Malawi, which will require comple-
tion of additional courses.

During their 4-month residence at Michigan State University,
fellows will receive a stipend of US$ 2,500/month, plus living
expenses of US$ 1,200/month. For the remainder of the training
period, fellows will receive a salary supplement of US$ 1,500/
month. All transportation costs to and from the United States
will be covered, as will all course tuition and fees at both
universities. In addition, each fellow will receive an internet-
capable laptop computer.

Applicants must:
* be residents of Malawi or a country contiguous with Malawi;

* have at least a Master's (M.A., M.S., M.Phil, M.P.H. or
equivalent) or M.D. degree. At least one of the applicant's
post-secondary degrees must be from a university in which the
primary language of instruction is English;

* already hold a position at their institution for which schol-
arship, research, or teaching are primary responsibilities;

* be able to secure their institution's support for their under-
taking the fellowship training and for their subsequent scholar-
ship and teaching in the field of international research ethics.

To apply, applicants should submit:
* A 2-page letter explaining their interest and qualifications
for undertaking the fellowship;

* A curriculum vita or resume;

* 3 letters of recommendation. One of these should be from a re-
sponsible institutional official who offers to grant the indi-
vidual leave during the 15-month training period, and pledges
the institution's continuing support for the individual's work
in international research ethics after the completion of the
fellowship;

* One or more samples of written work (in English), preferably
examples of previous scholarly or research reports.

Applications will not be considered until all materials are re-
ceived. All materials are due by March 15, 2006.
