Meeting in Tanzania in support of innovative models of HIV pre-
vention
---------------------------------------------------------------

Dear All,

On Wednesday, March 22nd, a meeting will be held at the Univer-
sity of Dar es Salaam for youth-led groups and organizations in-
volved in school and community-based HIV/AIDS prevention and
care activities. The purpose of the meeting is to introduce a
new initiative being developed by students at Brown and Stanford
Medical Schools in the United States, in collaboration with the
African Regional Youth Initiative, to support youth-led HIV/AIDS
organizations. We also hope to learn about the HIV/AIDS work be-
ing done by young people in different communities, the chal-
lenges faced by youth organizations, and how you feel that your
needs and concerns can best be addressed.

Overview of new initiative to support youth-led organizations:

We are developing a new initiative to showcase innovative models
of HIV prevention, treatment and care developed by young people
in resource-poor countries, using web-based multimedia presenta-
tions (MMPs). These presentations use photographs, audio, and
video to tell the stories of the challenges facing young people
in different communities with respect to HIV/AIDS, and the
strategies that youth have developed to address them. The objec-
tive is to raise awareness and funding for youth-led HIV/AIDS
programs, and inspire youth in other resource-poor countries to
replicate and integrate the programs showcased in the MMPs in
their own communities. By doing this, we hope to rapidly scale-
up youth-targeted HIV prevention and care services in communi-
ties that lack these programs, develop a movement of youth work-
ing cooperatively to reduce HIV incidence and improve treatment
and care services in underserved areas, and provide an evidence
base of effective models of prevention and care that donors,
policymakers, and the general public can support.

This project will be replicated in other countries in and out-
side of Africa.
