Shigellosis: disease and epidemiology

This lecture describes the prominent microbiologic and epidemi-
ologic characteristics of the genus Shigella. The peculiar fea-
tures of the four serogroups, sonnei, flexneri, boydii and
dysenteriae are emphasized with special reference to their close
association with the socio-economic and public health aspects of
the countries involved in endemic and/or epidemic patterns of
spread. Moreover, some information on prevention and control
strategies is provided.
