Microbial Source Tracking

Microbial Source Tracking (MST) is a branch of microbiology that
focuses on the development and application of methods that en-
able rapid identification of the origins of contamination (e.g.
enteric pathogens). The methods typically applied in MST are
chemical, biochemical or genetic. Although chemical and bio-
chemical methods are easy to perform the most sensitive / dis-
criminatory methods are based on molecular fingerprinting. There
are several approaches to DNA type microbes all with advantages
and disadvantages. The following lecture will provide an over-
view of current MST techniques and potential future directions.
