This course will be held at the Swiss Tropical Institute, Basel,
Switzerland. It will be organized specifically for English-
speaking candidates from developing countries, through a dona-
tion from the Government of Switzerland (Federal Department of
Foreign Affairs, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation,
[SDC]). The course is considered as a teaching module for tropEd
Master's Degree in International Health.

A. Programme

The first part of the course will be devoted to general aspects
of surveillance of transmissible diseases, illustrated by case
studies. Teaching modules will then be dedicated to general
principles of epidemiology and transmission of infectious dis-
eases. The second part of the course will deal with the func-
tions and importance of the disease notification system. Deci-
sion structures and necessary means for the control of epidemics
will also be dealt with. The teaching approach of this course is
based on the "learning by experience" or "problem learning"
method, complemented by some expert presentations.

B. Selection criteria

Candidates should fulfil the following requirements:

- Have and excellent knowledge of English;
- University degree (priority will be given to candidates who
are engaged in public health activities and who are particularly
interested in the surveillance of transmissible diseases);
- Be under 40 years of age.

Scientists interested in participating in the course should im-
mediately apply to the health authority of their Government and
complete a Fellowship Application Form (WHO 52.1) which can be
obtained from the Office of the WHO Representative or the Minis-
try of Health. This form should be submitted for approval to the
Government, who will then forward the nominations to the World
Health Organization, Geneva, through the relevant WHO Regional
Office. Only candidates nominated by their Governments and who
can at tend the entire Course will be taken into consideration.
In addition, candidates should send details of their scientific
work and explain their interest in the course in a letter sent
directly to:

This letter, which is mandatory, should also indicate that an
official application has been made through the appropriate gov-
ernment channels.

Only selected candidates will be contacted (where possible, by
E-mail or facsimile) to inform them of their selection. They
will receive from the SWISS TROPICAL INSTITUTE in Basel, air
tickets (or other) for their travel to Switzerland and a fellow-
ship allowance for the duration of the Course.

NB: Candidates who applied to the Advanced WHO/TDR Course on Im-
munology, Vaccinology and Biotechnology Applied to Infectious
Diseases (6/9-21/10/2006) and who wish to be considered for the
surveillance course, do not need to send another application
(WHO 52.1). A letter and/or e-mail to Dr Launois
(mailto:launoisp@who.int) is sufficient. Candidates may also
wish to be considered for one course or for both.
