"Children of Darfur: Picturing Genocide" Exhibit Available for Summer and Fall Hosting
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

Read below about a wonderful opportunity during this summer and fall,
to host the "Children of Darfur: Picturing Genocide" exhibit. Even with
the signing of a peace deal, there is much uncertainty and work to be
done. These pictures make the continuing challenges clear. Please
contact Africa Action at the phone or email for more info, and see some
of the particulars about shipping and hosting. Many thanks and all
best wishes, Janet (Feldman, kaippg@earthlink.net)

*Children of Darfur: Picturing Genocide ? An Exhibit*

Children are the youngest survivors of this genocide, and their
drawings depict the atrocities that they face. Dr. Jerry Ehrlich, a
pediatrician from New Jersey, collected drawings from children in
Darfur while he was working in one of the camps for internally
displaced people. Africa Action has converted these drawings into an
exhibit to help remind people of the on-going genocide in Darfur.

Ehrlich writes: ?I spent 2 months during the summer of 2004 as a
volunteer for Doctors Without Borders caring for children in a medical
center at a camp for internally displaced persons in Darfur, Sudan. I
wanted to document the plight of the people through the eyes of
children. I brought with me 25 boxes of crayons and about 400 pieces of
drawing paper. They were given out to children between the ages 8 and
12. I asked them to draw about their lives in Darfur and return 7-8
drawings for me to take home as a remembrance.

As the children brought back the drawings they were placed in my day
pack under my medical instruments. At the end of the day they were
hidden in a Sunday edition of The New York Times that I brought with
me. That's how I was able to get them out of the country. As you view
the drawings their message is obvious. They depict the atrocities these
children have gone through and still unfortunately live with".

The exhibit is made up of eight children?s drawings in 24?x 36? format
and an introductory piece of the same size that explains the exhibit
and invites people to sign the accompanying postcards to President
Bush. The exhibit has traveled throughout the Washington, D.C. area and
to Boston, New York, Atlanta, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maine. If you
would like to host the exhibit contact us at mobilize@africaaction.org
and we will do our best to add you to the schedule, or call
+1-202-546-7961.

Africa Action will provide hosts with all the exhibit materials, nine
24" x 36" pieces and nine easels for display, 25 smaller supplemental
pieces that add context to the drawings, and postcards and other public
education materials concerning the situation in Darfur. Africa Action
expects hosts to treat the materials with care and respect and return
them in tact to our office. We will cover the initial shipping costs
but expect the hosts to cover return shipping.

*IF* the host can safely and carefully re-pack the exhibit in the boxes
and with the packing materials in which it arrived this cost is roughly
$150. We also expect the host to guarantee minimum insurance coverage
of $200, UPS automatically ensures $100 at no extra cost, and provide
Africa Action staff with legitimate tracking numbers. To read a review
of our exhibit in the Washington Informer follow this link:

The only confirmed location is Harrisburg, PA from August 1-30. It will
be housed at the Gallery at Walnut Place as part of the Annual Arts for
Peace and Justice Exhibition. There are two special receptions planned,
one on August 5 from 1-4pm and a second August 26 from 1-4pm with
poetry readings and speakers. www.artsforpeaceandjustice.net
