Food for a genuine pro-poor thought (12)
---------------------------------------
If education were the panacea for our woes in Africa Zimbabwe would be one of the richest nations in the world. The truth of the matter is that we are better off investing in the health of the poor to enable them to work for their own sustenance.
Education as a solution would only work if it meets the following criteria:
1. It should be uniquely relevant to the needs of the poor countries. For instance, it should emphasize employment creation and income generation as opposed to workforce creation.
2. Governments in poor countries need to rid themselves of corruption and their taste for western luxuries. We could start by driving more economic cars and less perks for ministers and their cronies.
3. Pay attractive salaries in order to retain key personnel to avoid or at least limit brain drain.
