It is an honor and pleasure to invite you to a seminar and reception to launch the new book Disease and Mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa (Second Edition) at the Cape Town Book Fair:

The 400 page volume consists of 24 chapters written by over 70 authors covering the most common diseases and conditions contributing to ill health in Africa.  It will provide policy makers with a comprehensive reference of high-quality epidemiological information on the nature and extent of health problems and the health care strategies that show the most promise in Sub-Saharan Africa.  The volume is the product of a collaborative effort of the World Bank and the South African Medical Research Council.

Disease and Mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa provides the epidemiological evidence base for policy makers in Sub-Saharan Africa to act on the recommendations in Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries. This recently published volume helps policy makers identify priorities in health, and how to deliver interventions to a targeted population in the most cost-effective manner.

Disease and Mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa (Second Edition) is the World Bank?s most recent publication that provides policy makers with a comprehensive reference of high-quality epidemiological information on the nature and extent of health problems in Sub-Saharan Africa and the health care strategies that show the most promise. This new edition of Disease and Mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa represents a dramatic advancement in knowledge since the publication in 1991 of the first edition, and reflects the growth in technical capacity for data collection.

The current volume documents the depth and breadth of the burden that the HIV/AIDS epidemic is inflicting upon Africa, leading to a stalling or a reversal of the gains made in health indicators, including infant and under-five mortality rates and life expectancy at birth. The epidemic has not only increased the spread of communicable disorders?such as tuberculosis, malaria, respiratory tract infections, and diarrhoea ? but has also affected the epidemiology of cancers, mental health disorders, and neurological disorders.
