The sequencing of genomes such as the human, malaria and rice genomes were expected by some to make massive in-roads into ending hunger, disease and poverty. For some slow progress in useful application throws doubt on the Millennium Development Project?s assertion that science and technology are fundamental to ending poverty and disease.
Despite the impressive scientific and technological advances and their promise, questions still remain about what tangible advances link science and technology policy with education, health or economic policies in developing countries where poverty reduction and development is needed.
This conference aims to tackle these questions and critically analyse the barriers to success in the areas of health and agriculture.
Plenary speakers are:
- Dr. Simon Best, Chair of ICRISAT
- Dr. Roger Cortbaoui, Director of International Cooperation, CIP
- Dr. Hannah Kettler, Economist/ Program Officer, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
- Dr. Chrispin Kambili, Senior Medical Officer (East Africa), International AIDS Vaccine Initiative
- Dr. John Mugabe, Science and Technology Advisor, NEPAD
- Prof. Judith Wakhungu, Executive Director, African Centre for Technology Studies
- Prof. Myles Wickstead, Former Head of Commission for Africa Secretariat
