Nigeria Abstinence Coalition Plans 3rd National Leadership Workshop
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Colleagues,
Nigeria, Africa?s most populous country is a land of young people. Around 26 million of them are facing all the excitement and challenges of growing up into adulthood. Adolescents, youth and singles aged 12 to 25 have the highest infection rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS, with teenage women becoming infected at twice the rate of teenage men. Every year more than one million Nigerian youngsters acquire an STI. The country has the third largest number of persons living with HIV/AIDS in the world. Behind these figures are shattered lives and broken promises.
The national abstinence leadership training is an annual event, which builds the capacity of abstinence/fidelity advocates from across Nigeria to promote chaste lifestyle in families, schools, religious groups and organizations. This year?s event will take place on October 10-12, 2006.
An All State Abstinence March and Rally at the National Stadium in Lagos with musical funfair in favour of abstinence and youth character by popular artists will flag off the workshop. The technical sessions will include skills building on parental involvement, fundraising and abstinence advocacy techniques. Seasoned academics and passionate abstinence educators have been mobilized to facilitate the biggest abstinence event in Nigeria to date.
Prospective participants should send email to: naltw2006@yahoo.com or visit the coordinating office website: www.actionfamily-ng.org for details.
The Nigeria Abstinence Coalition is a network of over 100 NGOs, FBOs and community groups promoting abstinence and spousal fidelity in the country. Formed in 2003 the mission of the Coalition is to halt the epidemics of STIs, HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy through the promotion of sexual self-control by both youth and adults. The lessons from Uganda show that this strategy is effective in rolling back HIV infection rates.
