Exports risk EU ban over DDT, says envoy
By Stephen Ilungole in Brussels
The European Union (EU) will ban exports from Uganda if the
proposed use of DDT as a malaria preventive measure goes ahead,
Uganda's envoy to Belgium has said.
Katenta Apuuli said in an interview that taking the World Health
Organisaition's (WHO) directive at face value could cause an
economic set-back.
Apuuli was speaking to Ugandan journalists on a trip to the
European Commission headquarters in Brussels and the World Trade
Organisation Secretariat in Geneva.
Recently, the WHO okayed indoor spraying of DDT in developing
countries as a malaria prevention measure. Apuuli said the way
Uganda would spray the DDT was an issue.
"Shall we be able to use it the right way? The repercussions
will be immediate. DDT is in the minds of European consumers.
They won't go for testing. Once we use DDT, the EU will ban all
our consumables to their markets. It could set us back as a
country," Apuuli said. Over 80% of Uganda's major exports of
fish, cut flowers and coffee are to the EU market.
