DDT stories 10.01.06 (3)
-----------------------
Dear Dr Moula,
DDT is not the only insecticide in the fight against malaria. Other alternatives are available and although the insecticide is slightly more expensive, taking into account the overall cost of spraying, the differences are actually very small.
Again, I am not an expert in vector control (let be insecticides) but I find the debate on DDT rather annoying (even demagogic). Western environmentalists (don't worry...I'm not one of them) are maybe not such ferocious killers as we think! I have more doubt on the good intensions of certain (conservative) politicians in the states who have pushed the re-use of DDT than of some bearded greeny who is worried about the plumes of an eagle or its egg shell.
Let's use it where there is proven resistance and let's hope that we can reduce the malaria burden world wide.
