Salmonella is a ubiquitous organism and has been studied extensively. It has been studied not only as a disease causing agent but also as a tool in molecular biology for understanding the mutagenic/ carcinogenic potential of different substances, for determining the role different genes controlling secretary system of gram negative bacteria, mechanism of intracellular survival of pathogens and also for designing the protocols for determining the role of a gene in pathogenesis. Recently Salmonella has been used as a vehicle for targeted delivery of different biomolecules having health modulating potential, e.g., to control cancers, to deliver contraceptive vaccines and various bacterial and viral proteins. More than a dozen of vaccine candidate proteins have been expressed in attenuated Salmonella as an important step towards development of multivalent candidate oral mucosal vaccines. Different aspects of Salmonella about its potential as candidate, in era of biotechnology, have been discussed.
