Vacancy for Scientific Officer with MRC Laboratories in the Gambia

Institition: Medical Research Council Laboratories, The Gambia

The MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the Medical Research Council's largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based and clinical
research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in developing countries by contributing to the development,
testing and safe adoption of interventions aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases.

As a Scientific Officer you will undertake routine microbiological analysis of clinical specimens arising from the Diarrhoeal Project to
identify the microbiologic etiology of severe diarrhoeal disease. This will involve liaising with our international collaborators in Africa and
the USA and writing up and presenting high quality data.

We are interested in receiving applications from candidates with a BSc or equivalent in Medical Microbiology and a minimum of 3 years
experience working in a routine microbiology laboratory. You will have practical experience with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice and the
ability to work independently with minimal supervision following training.

You will have proven experience in supervising staff, excellent written and spoken English and good IT skills. You will also be able to
demonstrate excellent communication skills in a multi-cultural environment together with a flexible and well-organised approach to
work. Experience in molecular biology, e.g. DNA isolation and PCR, and/or an MSc would be an advantage.

You will be based in Basse, which is in a rural area approximately 400 kilometres from the coast where local facilities and schooling are

The minimum total salary package in occupational group D2 will be D320222 (Dalasis) per annum. For displaced staff the package will
include a displacement allowance, furnished accommodation, free flights to home country for annual leave and other benefits.

The appointment is for 3 years.
