HIV/AIDS South Africa: Acting together to support refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Activists
South Africa has highest prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in the region, 10% of the population is infected. Direct problem: HIV/AIDS infect and affect all communities in South Africa. More then 7 million migrants legal and illegal actually are living in South Africa, mostly; they come from poorest African countries where media infrastructures are not developed to address the awareness of HIV/AIDS campaign. Once arrive in South Africa, mostly legal and illegal migrants especially youth live in foreign concentration zones: e.g. in Johannesburg: Hillbrow, Johannesburg central, Yeoville, high prostitution zones (sex workers concentration zones because the high presence of migrants). 90% of newcomers (migrants), refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants are concentrated in those high risk zones are not very well inform and aware of HIV/AIDS epidemic impacts.
According to our research: 75% of sex workers come from South African rural areas, 10% from Zimbabwe, 5% from Zambia and 10% from others countries).High prostitution prevalence in these zones is due the high concentration of foreign who use to paying well the sex transactions and attracted to enjoying very simple and cheap prices South African big caricature women sex workers. 15% of migrants became infected 6 months after arriving in South Africa
Xenophbia ?kuere kuere ?means foreign stress refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants infected and affected by HIV/AIDS to express themselves. Refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants in South Africa cannot access to ART, because of exclusion, xenophobia. Some HIV+ patients have been precipitated to death because they were ?kuere kuere? foreign.
Refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants are afraid to access to VCT because of discrimination. Xenoiphnabia in South Africa and the risk to be precipitated to death.
Act for refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants, act for humanity, HIV/AIDS affected refugees, act together
