Applications are invited from suitably qualified applicants for an appointment as a Scientific Officer working for the Malaria Programme to work on an EDCTP project that aims to develop and establish molecular techniques for quantifying malaria parasites in clinical samples. The post-holder will contribute to research in molecular genotyping of P. falciparum and be required to provide support to other areas of work within the Malaria Programme as the need arises, including training of other staff or learning new methods and approaches from them where appropriate.

We seek someone with:
Ø      BSc in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry or Biology.
Ø      At least 3 years relevant experience working in a laboratory post BSc. 
Ø      A good understanding of science, immunology and biology.
Ø      Experience working with DNA sequence analysis software.
Ø      Experience presenting results to internal parties.
Ø      Excellent communication skills.
Ø      Excellent written and spoken English.
Ø      Computer literate, e.g. word & database and spreadsheet software.
Ø      Experience with computer-based analyses and presentation of experimental data
Ø      Demonstrated ability to work in a highly disciplined manner in a laboratory based on previous experience.
Ø      Ability to supervise staff, ensuring that high standards are maintained at all times.
Ø      Ability to work co-operatively in a team.
Ø      Ability to work with minimal supervision following training.
Ø      Willingness to work outside normal working hours.
Ø      Willingness to work in MRC upcountry field stations as required.

Preferred: 
Ø      Previous experience in cell culture and immunology/molecular biology would be an advantage.

Ø      Post-graduate degree in a science subject would be an added advantage.

The appointment is for 2 years in the first instance.

Salary will be in Occupational Group D2 at a starting salary of D320,000 Dalasis per annum including allowances.  For displaced staff the package will include a displacement allowance, furnished accommodation, flights to base country for annual holidays and other benefits.
