Open Learning Web site on Enteric pathogens
-------------------------------------------

Dear Friends of the Open Learning Web site on Enteric pathogens

A new lecture is available at site http://www.oloep.org

Sleator R (Ireland)
Molecular mechanism of microbial pathogenesis

This lecture covers the molecular mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis. We begin with an overview of pathogenesis as described by Robert Koch in his famous postulates and later using molecular Koch postulates. Then, using the intracellular foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes as a model organism, we outline the three main approaches; in silico, in vitro and in vivo, which are commonly used to identify virulence genes.

Finally, we conclude with a brief introduction to the concept of Patho-biotechnology - the exploitation of pathogenic bacteria, and in particular bacterial virulence strategies, for beneficial applications both in industry and biomedicine
