Vax-Typhi New Salmonella Typhi Vi Polysaccharide Vaccine

Ochoa Azze R.F.

Typhoid fever remains a serious problem in many developing countries. Safe and immunogenic vaccines have been developed, based on purified Vi polysaccharide. A low-price vaccine vax-TyVi has been recently developed. Clinical trials have been carried out in 1600 children, teenagers and young adults to evaluate vax-TyVi with respect to the Typhim Vi (Pasteur Mereux) control vaccine. The adverse events were studied by active and passive surveillance systems. The seroconversion and seroprotection rates were calculated. The main results of the national postmarketing surveillance system are also analyzed. The reactogenicity of vax-TyVi and Typhim Vi was similar in all clinical trials. Side effects were infrequent and mild. Also no significant differences were detected between seroprotection rates in both Vi polysaccharide vaccines. No serious adverse events have been reported after more than 2 million doses have been applied. The global adverse event rate is 4.87 x 100 000 doses applied. The new Salmonella Typhi Vi polysaccharide vaccine vax-TyVi is highly immunogenic, with insignificant adverse reactions. This vaccine can be used in developing countries and as a vaccine for travelers or others exposed to typhoid bacilli.
