Opening of the Salam Cardiac Center, Sudan

Announcing the official opening ceremony of the Salam Cardiac Center, Khartoum, Sudan May 3, 2007. The Cardiac Center founded by Emergency (http://www.emergency.it) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health of the Republic of Sudan. The Hospital will provide specialized cardiac care for the region, including adjoining countries Central African Republic, Chad, The Democrat Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, and Uganda. The Ministries of Health of these countries are expected to take part to the inauguration ceremonies.
Rheumatic Heart Disease is the most common acquired heart disease found in the region in children and adults and the incidence of Cardiovascular Disease is rising rapidly in adults. According to WHO in the African region, there are 0.4 cardiologists, 13 primary care physicians and 98 nurses per 100,000 people working in non-communicable diseases. There are 300,000 deaths each year with 2 million people requiring repeat hospitalizations. It is estimated that in the next 5 to 20 years, 1 million people will require surgical intervention.
The completed Salam Center has 3 operating theatres, 15-bed Intensive Care Unit, 16-bed step down unit and 32-bed surgical ward. There will be radiology, ultrasound, CT Scan, a Catheterization Laboratory and Physiotherapy Department for rehabilitation.
