Resources on community-based distribution ofDepo-Provera (DMPA) (2)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear fellow readers,
Although I still believe that Depo-Provera is an excellent contraceptive, I want to highlight a severe problem that is not being openly talked about while it should! One of the side effects of taking Depo-Provera over time is severe osteoporosis. Hence, Depo-Provera should not be taken for more than 4 years. Unfortunately, this is not displayed to women. The side effects discussed are indeed limited to those mentioned in the FHI kit (weight gain, irregularity of menstruation, headaches). I am talking from experience; at 44 years old, after six years on Depo-Provera, I was suddenly diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. I live in the US and so was lucky that my doctor knew about the risk, and had me take a bone densitometry test which came with the diagnosis above. If I was living in a remote village in Africa and was getting my Depo-provera from a successful CBD agent, I hate to imagine what would have been my fate!!! Severe osteroporosis I am told is irreversible. I am on drugs to keep it from evolving, and I have to pay particular attention at my every move because of the risk of fracture to my spine! Food for thought, and I hope, for action!
