Discussion about WHOPES and Long-lasting Insecticidal Nets to control malaria (8)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello all,

I can understand concerns about chemical sprays from a parental view. I cannot find any data that makes DDT any worse than the additives and preservatives that infect our food supply. I have seen small children with malaria and I would prefer to use whatever I could to prevent my children from getting it. Residual spraying if done properly is quite safe.

Children were routinely powdered with DDT for head lice and bedbugs in this country and nobody seems to have side effects from it. Malaria is a life threatening disease that I would give anything to eradicate. It kills usually the old, young and weak and kills by some estimates 3000 a day.

As far as a petroleum based repellent, I have never heard of one. I would think that it would be uncomfortable to wear in the areas I have been in Africa.

Cheers,

Craig Audiss
