Poor injection and sharps waste disposal practices unnecessarily expose patients, health care providers, and communities to HIV and other bloodborne pathogens. The World Health Organization estimates that each year around the world, more than 25 million people are infected with HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C through unsafe injections and reused needles. John Snow Inc.'s Making Medical Injections Safer (MMIS) Project works within 11 countries in Africa and the Caribbean to improve injection practices and reduce medical transmission of bloodborne diseases such as HIV. In addition, MMIS works with local governments to build sustainable programs that establish and implement national plans for safe disposal of medical waste associated with injections.
MMIS is pleased to announce the latest issue of its Program Highlights Newsletter featuring the following highlights of programmatic activities:
UGANDA: National Policy Aims to Stop Disease Transmission Through Reuse of Injection Equipment
HAITI: Improving Health Care Waste Management Systems
NIGERIA: Launches National Policy on Injection Safety and Health Care Waste Management
SOUTH AFRICA: Partnerships to Expand Education and Community Outreach
