The Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC) was established in a meeting held at WHO/HQ, Geneva on 8-9 Dec 2005 with the objective of bringing together focal persons in other WHO departments, policy-makers, health providers and NGO's interested in capacity building of emergency and essential surgical and anaesthesia skills. The 2nd meeting of the GIEESC was held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, 24-25 Sept. 2007. There were 90 participants from 38 countries, and representing health providers, policy makers, professional societies, NGO's, epidemiologists, health economists, donors and partners in official relations with WHO, and relevant focal persons of other WHO depts.
