Dear All,

Report: Impact, Challanges and Long-Term Implications of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Programme in Nigeria
Report of The 2006 National Health Conference [NHC2006]

Following the Nigerian Government?s announced intension to increase the country?s antiretroviral therapy [ART] target from 10, 000 to 250, 000; the Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria [HERFON] found it imperative to undertake a study of the ART Programme - and the massive roll-out of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) - in Nigeria in order to:

Under-study the Nigerian ARV program structures and processes Ascertain the number of persons on the ART and the services rendered to them Identify gaps that are specific to the planning, procurement, distribution and usage of ARVs across the country Ascertain the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of service of the program Study the long term financing implication of the Nigerian ARV scale-up and identify strategies for the suitability of the ART program in the country.

This study has been concluded across the country and the result/report was formally presented to the public at a ceremony in Abuja on 17 September 2007.

The report is now freely downloadable on http://www.herfon.org and at http://www.herfon.org/docs/HERFON_ART_Report.pdf; as part of the foundation?s contributions to the control of the pandemic and achievement of national Millennium Development Goals [MDG] targets in Nigeria.

Also available from HERFON, and freely downloadable from its website, is the full report of the 2006 National Health Conference [NHC2006] http://www.herfon.org/docs/NHC2006_Details_of_Proceedings.pdf. This conference was the first private sector initiated and the second in the history of Nigeria. Its theme was ?Health in Nigeria: sustaining the reforms beyond 2007?, with the following sub thematic areas: The Role of Health in National Development, Stewardship in Health, Resources for Health and Strengthening Health Services Delivery.

Better Health for All,

Uzo?
