I am glad to hear that malaria is getting the attention that it deserves. It is a tragedy that it has been either ignored or met indifference in the world. Adding DDT to the list of chemicals approved will be a great help in keeping the mosquito away from the home. Research apparently has concluded that the mosquito stays away from the smell of DDT keeping the occupants of the home much safer.
This protects people at least while they stay in their homes and perhaps to a lesser degree sit on their porches etc. It still leaves a huge gap and does not address the core problem, which is the mosquito. When we start talking these types of monies in the billions of dollars it only makes sense to finish the job by killing the mosquito. A complete, comprehensive, mosquito eradication program is the only way to address this. It is much cheaper than miracle drugs to fight malaria they have because the mosquito is still there. If we isolate the mosquito to outside killing them is quite easy and efficient, ie finish the job and do away with the root cause.
This is being done other places quite well, and will work in Africa. Sitting around saying it won't work is costing alot of people their lives. I also believe that the 90% reduction with medicines and bednets is being extremely optimistic.
Cheers,
Craig
