Dear Colleagues

Thank you everyone for posting this ... especially Claudio Schuftan and Vern Weitzel.

I don't know about others who read these postings ... but these UN reports just make me hopping mad. The issues that the UN (and others in the international relief and development community) talk about today are the same issues only worse that they were talking about 20 years ago, even 30 or 40 years ago. But these well known organizations studiously avoid asking the simple but important questions of WHY and HOW this is present day situation has come about.

My observation would be that it seems that the international relief and development community (1) has very limited institutional memory ... and accordingly they spend money over and over again to discover anew things they already ought to know, and (2) the leaders and the organizations they are associated with have little or no competence to do the work that needs to be done.

My hope is that a system of public accounting can be put in place so that this leadership and these institutions can be held to account for how much money they consume and how little gets done for the money.

Sincerely

Peter Burgess
