[afro-nets] Making Medical Injection Safer Project's (MMIS) Program Highlights

Poor injection and sharps waste disposal practices unnecessarily expose patients, health care providers, and communities to HIV and other bloodborne pathogens. The World Health Organization estimates that each year around the world, more than 25 million people are infected with HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C through unsafe injections and reused needles.  John Snow Inc.'s Making Medical Injections Safer (MMIS) Project works within 11 countries in Africa and the Caribbean to improve injection practices and reduce medical transmission of bloodborne diseases such as HIV.  In addition, MMIS works with local governments to build sustainable programs that establish and implement national plans for safe disposal of medical waste associated with injections.
