Regional Advocacy For Reproductive Health
Last week, a two-day sub-regional consultative meeting on "Ownership and Leadership of Sexual and Reproductive Health in West African States" was held April 14- 16 in Abuja. The meeting was convened to deliberate and motivate action on the concern expressed by the African Union AU that African countries are not likely to achieve the MDGs without significant improvement in the reproductive health status of their people. The meeting, which was hosted by the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria PPFN and the regional body the IPPF Africa Region, was attended by government officials in charge of reproductive health, ECOWAS representatives, parliamentarians, development partners and civil society organisations working in reproductive health in the four target countries.
In his welcome address, the PPFN Director General, Dr I.M. Ibrahim, said the meeting's main goal was to stimulate dialogue among civil society organisations and key stakeholders. The chairperson of the IPPF Africa Region, Mrs. Hannatu Ibrahim, said her organisation and its member organisations in different countries had been collaborating with the African Union and UNFPA to ensure that each country takes ownership of various regional strategies adopted by countries. Hence the design and implementation of the project from "Donorship to Ownership"
