Poor injection and sharps waste disposal practices unnecessarily expose patients, health care providers, and communities to HIV and other bloodborne pathogens. The World Health Organization estimates that each year around the world, more than 25 million people are infected with HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C through unsafe injections and reused needles. John Snow Inc.'s Making Medical Injections Safer (MMIS) Project works within 11 countries in Africa and the Caribbean to improve injection practices and reduce medical transmission of bloodborne diseases such as HIV. In addition, MMIS works with local governments to build sustainable programs that establish and implement national plans for safe disposal of medical waste associated with injections.

MMIS is pleased to announce the latest issue of its Program Highlights Newsletter featuring the following highlights of programmatic activities:

• UGANDA:Collaboration Between PEPFAR Partners Improves Health Care Waste Management
• COTE D'IVOIRE:Integrating Safe Injection Devices into the Cost-Recovery System to Ensure Sustainable Supplies of Safe Needles and Syringes
• KENYA: Injection Safety and Health Care Waste Management Policy Launch
• MOZAMBIQUE: Monitoring Syringe Consumption Facilitates National Transition to Safer Equipment
