STRATEGIES FOR HOPE - past the 50,000 mark
by Glen Williams
For many communities in sub-Saharan Africa, Strategies for Hope (SFH) is something of a household name. They have come to know SFH as an organisation which produces books, training manuals and films which are helping them to come to grips with the challenges of HIV and AIDS.
In 2008/09, over 50,000 copies of SFH materials were distributed - mainly in sub-Saharan Africa but also in Latin America, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and South and Southeast Asia. Since the SFH project began in December 1989, over one million copies of SFH materials have been produced and distributed.
A total of 25 SFH books and manuals, and eight films, have been produced so far - most in French as well as English; some in Swahili, Portuguese and Spanish, and several in local African languages. The 'Stepping Stones' training manual, published by SFH in 1995, has been produced in six Indian languages, as well as Indonesian, Russian and Afrikaans.
Central to the ethos of Strategies for Hope is partnership with faith-based organisations, churches, NGOs and community groups in the countries most severely affected by the global AIDS epidemic. In 2008/09, for example, the Christian AIDS Network in Mozambique produced Portuguese editions of three Strategies for Hope handbooks. In South Africa, the Christian Literature Fund co-publishes and distributes seven SFH books and the film, 'What can I do?'. In Indonesia, Population Concern International has produced and distributed 700 copies of the Indonesian edition of the 'Stepping Stones' training manual.
The SFH Trust's Annual Report for 2008/09 describes and documents the work of the Trust and its many partner organisations. To read the report, please visit the SFH website: http://www.stratshope.org/a-whoweare.htm
