Dear All,
I agree that no new group be created. Strengthening the existing systems as well as improvement in living conditions of our rural communities of the developing world is the actual answer. The TBAs to me are doing more harm than good. Even the cadre of community health officers championed by the late and esteemed health Minister of Nigeria has brought more challenges than solutions to solving health problems services in Nigerian PHC system. Many women attend ANC clinics at the public facilities, but only 20% are returning to deliver with skilled orthodox providers. They go to the mission TBA and independent TBAs. The result of course is the huge complications of 3rd stage of labour and subsequent deaths we still experience. A strong political will to develop the entire gamut of human development is what we need in Africa. Which young medical student exposed to the current high tech global facilities will not sigh to go to a remote rural area to serve when she could even be compromising her own welfare. What we do need is a total RETHINK of what African people need and deserve to have health or economic wise.
