The Same Sex Bill passed by Nigerian Senate
The bill provides in Section 5, "Persons who entered into a same sex marriage contract, or civil union commit an offence and are each liable on conviction to a term of 14 years in prison." Sections 5 sub-section 2 states:
"Any person, who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies, and organisations or directly or indirectly makes public show of same sex amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offence and shall each be liable on conviction to a term of 10 years in prison." People who know about the relationship are also punishable under Sub-section 3:
"Any person or group of persons that witness, abet and aids the solemnisation of a same sex marriage or civil union or supports the registration, operation and sustenance of gay clubs, societies, organisations, processions or meetings in Nigeria commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a term of 10 years imprisonment."
"By broadly defining 'same-sex marriage' as including all same-sex relationships, and targeting people who 'witness', 'aid' or 'abet' such relationships, the bill to "Nigeria's House of Representatives to show leadership and uphold or otherwise the rights of all persons in Nigeria by concurring to this reprehensible Bill. The world's most populous nations - 'India and China' are yet to accent and or accentuate by legalizing SSM. Nigeria with 167 million people and approximate gender ratio of 50:50 - While the critical fuss and brouhaha? Like in Ethiopia opinion survey has it that people perceive SSM as alien to their culture and foreign colonization against their cooperate existence over 125 years ago - It could be recalled that Ethiopia is the only country not colonized by any nation even when USA was colonized by Great Britain. With this bill finally passed in Nigeria what is the way to achieving MDGs by 2015 especially relating to SRH?
